Paraguay are on the brink of not qualifying for this year’s FIFA World Cup tournament in Qatar after they werebeaten at home by Uruguay in their latest qualifier. The two countries met in a Matchday 16 encounter and it was the Uruguayans who secured the win to boost their hopes of going to the Qatar 2022 tournament.

Two-time winners Uruguay secured a big win at the expense of Paraguay thanks to the 50th minute strike from Luis Suarez. The goal from the Atletico Madrid star gave Uruguay a 1-0 away win over the Paraguayans to leave them on the brink of not making it to the World Cup tournament at the end of this year.

Paraguay have had a disappointing Qatar 2022 World Cup campaign till date with 13 points from 15 qualifying games. As things stands, they are six points off latest opponents Uruguay who occupy the fifth spot on the South American standings which guarantees inter-confederation playoffs with three games to play. The Paraguayans are also seven points off Peru in the fourth and final automatic spot for qualification with three games to play.

Peru are in a fantastic position to qualify for the World Cup tournament later this year after they secured a priceless 1-0 away win over Colombia when the two teams met in a Matchday 15 encounter on Friday night. D. C. United winger Edison Flores scored the all-important goal with five minutes left to play to give the Peruvians a big win over their hosts. The victory moves Peru to within four points of Ecuador in third place ahead of their meeting in Lima at the start of next week. The Peruvians are in fourth spot and they can move within one point of Ecuador with an home win. The away win over Colombia has put them in a very good place to qualify for Qatar 2022.
